UNHCR discusses support for Myanmar migrants in Bangladesh, Thailand

Union Minister for Labour, Immigration and Population, U Thein Swe, received UNHCR Representative Mr Johan Cels at his office in Nay Pyi Taw on 10 July.
During the meeting, they openly discussed extending the tripartite MoU between the ministry, UNDP and UNHCR, continued tasks at the Myanmar-Bangladesh border if security concerns permit, Myanmar representatives travelling to Bangladesh within this month to negotiate repatriation of IDPs in Rakhine State, temporary suspension of UNHCR programmes to Buthidaung and Maungtaw districts during the rainy season, and submitting proposals for other projects.
They also discussed cooperation between the governments of Thailand and Myanmar to receive Myanmar migrants and UNHCR’s support on this matter.
They then discussed verification of citizenship for Myanmar IDPs living in Thai refugee camps, the repatriation process for it and reviewing UNHCR’s project report to support it, ensuring Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand can work there legally, and UNHCR’s close support in the repatriation process. —MNA (Translated by Zaw Htet Oo)
