The meeting was attended by UEC members, officials from the UEC office and representatives of 74 political
parties.
UEC Chairman U Hla Thein first addressed the meeting. He said they are implementing the National Strategic Plan (2019-2022) to ensure the 2020 General Elections are a success. He said the plan focuses on the crucial component of compiling an accurate voter’s list and by now a nationwide electoral list has been compiled.
The UEC Chairman said it is the duty of relevant sub-commissions to ensure the list is kept up to date. He said the people need to review the voter’s list when they are put up to correct any errors, file complaints or make requests. He said all citizens above the age of 18 are eligible to vote.
U Hla Thein urged political parties to make sure their constituents fully understand that they are only capable of voting if their name is on the voter’s list and to assist them in reviewing the list when they are put up. He also told of the importance to follow the code of conduct for political parties and Hluttaw representatives.
Next, UEC member U Aung Myint explained the preparation for the Hluttaw Election Bylaw, and fellow member U Myint Naing explained the compilation of the voter’s list for the 2020 General Elections.
Afterwards, UEC Office’s director-general explained the preparations for the actual general elections, attendees engaged in discussions, the UEC Chairman responded, and concluded the meeting with a closing speech.—MNA
