Over 50,000 international visitors visited the Mandalay Mahamuni pagoda between July and September, according to data provided by the Mahamuni pagoda trustee board.
The entrance fee for the Mahamuni pagoda was fixed at K5,000 from 1 July. During the three months from July, entrance fees of over K25 million was collected from 50,104 international visitors.
Currently, tourists are being allowed to enter the Mahamuni pagoda only through the Tourist Information Center, located in the north of the pagoda. Another tourist information center is being constructed to serve the high number of tourists. Moreover, toilets, lockers, wet tissues, and other services are already being offered to international visitors, and security staff and direction boards have been placed at the entrance, according to U Thein Tun, a member of the Mahamuni pagoda trustee board.
The fees collected will be spent on the renovation of the pagoda. According to official data, Mahamuni pagoda received 16,348 tourists in July, 19,020 tourists in August, and 14,736 tourists in September. —Than Zaw Min (IPRD)
