State Counsellor receives Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict

State Counsellor and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs Daw Aung San Suu Kyi received Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict Ms. Virginia Gamba yesterday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw.
During the meeting, the Special Representative called for the successful complementation of the Joint Action Plan being implemented by Myanmar with the Country Task Force on Monitoring and Reporting (CTFMR) on prevention of the recruitment and use of underage soldiers.
She expressed the UN’s desire to further cooperate with Myanmar in the promotion and protection of children rights.
The Special Representative requested of the State Counsellor to help to adopt expeditiously the Child Rights Bill which is before the Hluttaw.
The State Counsellor emphasised that the protection of the rights of the child is imperative, and thus it is necessary to promote the education sector in order to protect the rights of the children. The State Counsellor pointed out that violence usually takes place against the weak, who are mostly women and children.
She stressed that to avoid the occurrence of violence and abuse against the weak, preventive measures should be focused.—Myanmar News Agency
