Nay Pyi Taw, 29 March — President U Thein Sein and party left Singapore in the morning on Sunday and arrived back in Nay Pyi Taw at 8.10 pm. President U Thein Sein attended the state funeral of former Singapore Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew on Sunday.
The president, together with Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Wunna Maung Lwin and officials, left Nay Pyi Taw airport for Singapore at 7 am and the president and party were seen off at the airport by Vice President U Nyan Tun, Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, union ministers and the ambassador of Singapore to Myanmar and officials.
The president and party arrived at Changi International Airport at 11.40 am and were greeted by officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, Myanmar Ambassador to Singapore U Htay Aung, Military Attaché Brig-Gen Ko Ko Naing and officials.
Then, the president attended the state funeral of former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew at the Culture Centre of Singapore National University and signed the book of condolences.
Present at the state funeral were former and incumbent world leaders including Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan of Malaysia Abdul Halim, King of Butan Namgyel Wangchuck, President of the Republic of Korea Park Geun-hye, President of Indonesia Joko Widodo, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott, Prime Minister of Cambodia Samdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Laos Thongsing Thammavong, Prime Minister of Thailand Prayuth Chan-ocha, Prime Minister of Vietnam Nguyen Tan Dung, Vice President of China Li Yuanchao, former US President Bill Clinton, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs William Hague, officials and the public of Singapore.
At the state funeral, eleven eminent people including the eldest son of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, President Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, second son of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Lee Hsien Yang, delivered speeches honoring the former prime minister.
Former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew died at 3.18 am local time on 23 March in Singapore. His death was a loss of a great leader not only for Singapore but also for the ASEAN and the world and the entire world expressed their griefs for his death. People of Singapore waited for hours to pay their last tribute to the former prime minister.—MNA
