More than 1,000 cyclists from Yangon participated in an event yesterday to mark World Bicycle Day, which falls on 3 June. The cycling event kicked off at Baganlone Island, near Karaweik, Kandawgyi garden around 6 a.m. yesterday.
Officials from the Myanmar Bicycle Federation and enthusiasts from cycling groups started from Baganlone Island and rode on two routes along the ring road circling the Kandawgyi garden, which is about 3 miles in circumference.
“Today is World Bicycle Day. So, we are riding the bikes to mark this day. The World Bicycle Day event was held with the aim of creating awareness among the public on the health benefits of riding, reducing environmental pollution, promoting interest in the sport, and developing a new generation of professional bikers,” said U Kyaw Min Than, secretary, Myanmar Bicycle Federation.
The authorities allowed participants to ride any bicycle of their choice. The MSP company distributed white T-shirts bearing ‘June 3 World Bicycle Day’ logos to participants.
