Myeik has potential to attract more tourists

Myeik, a coastal area in Taninthari Region, is a topographically distinct region. The friendliness and hospitality of local people make visitors feel home and relaxed alongside their customs and traditional festivals as well as historic places.
Economic development deriving from growing trade with Thailand and successful businesses has given the region a facelift.
The number of Thai visitors coming through a border trade camp in Mawtaung reached over 8,600 in 2014, up from 6,300 in 2013, with other tourists totaling 2,421 in 2014.
In a bid to meet the rising demand of incoming visitors, more and more hotels of high standard are mushrooming. The White House Hotel was opened on 25 December last year, thereby creating job opportunities for locals and facilitating tours of historic places. Myeik is worth a visit.—Zaw Myo Naing (Myeik District IPRD)
