A workshop on disability rating and registration of people with disabilities was held on 27-28 February in Nay Pyi Taw.
Speaking at the workshop, Union Minister Dr. Win Myat Aye, the Chairman of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Committee, said the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief, and Resettlement is focusing on capacity building to develop human resources with the help of related ministries, civil society organizations, and the general public.
“To improve the social status and ensure the development of individuals, we are providing social protection services. We’ve directed our efforts to natural disaster management to mitigate the damage caused by disasters, which are obstacles to national development. New laws, rules, and regulations have already been adopted to enable people with disabilities to raise their social status as well as bring about national economic development. Giving support to people with disabilities is part of social protection assessment. The Ministry can reduce the number of people with disabilities by fulfilling their requirements along with working for growth and development of children,” he said.
“We also need to record the exact number of people with disabilities to enable them to have free access to education and primary healthcare, in addition to creating job opportunities for them. We will conduct a disability rating exercise and register people with disabilities in Yangon and Bago regions, and Kayin State as a trial run,” said the minister.
The workshop was held to enable people with disabilities to enjoy their rights, he added.
Thereafter, UNICEF representative to Myanmar, Ms. June Kunugi, also explained the objectives for holding the workshop. The workshop was led by officials from related departments and other organizations. Participants discussed their role and responsibility in defining the level of disability, registration of people with disabilities, forming a registration committee, and assigning responsibility to people with disabilities.
