Farmers in Indawgyi receive organic and PGS Certification

A ceremony to present Organic and Participatory Guarantee system (PGS) Certifications to local farmers was held at Indawkyi Wetland Education Centre in Kachin state on Monday.
It was jointly organized by Myanmar Organic Growers and Producers Association (MOGPA) and Fauna and Flora International (FFI).
The use of soil and organic fertilizers in Indawkyi region is more frequent, with chemical pesticides being used more heavily. Therefore, Indawkyi region seeks to be an organic zone for Kachin state, with improved organic farming practices. As the Indawkyi organic zone has become recognized in the global market, it is helping Kachin state’s reputation, and farmers to increase their incomes, said U Kyaw Kyaw Win, Kachin State Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation.
In 2015, MOGPA and FFI teamed up to conduct organic farming and develop production projects, with the aim to encourage the local people to conserve the natural environment, produce marketable quality products and not affect the aquaculture and biodiversity of Indawkyi Lake and its environment.
At this ceremony, Dr. Than Than Sein, vice president of MOGPA, handed out organic certificates to 68 growers of 580 organic acres of plantation, who are members of the Indawkyi Natural Farming Association.
There are 12 criteria for growers to adopt organic farming. At first, 71 growers were targeted to receive certificates, but three failed to meet the criteria. Organic products were sold out last year during the pagoda festival and paddy, soybean, peanut, onion and garlic are cultivated, not only for commercial purposes, but also for health and safety, said U Hla Win, a grower from Layponelay village.
