The Central Committee for Convening the 73rd Union Day in 2020 held a coordination meeting at the meeting hall of the Office of the President in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday, where Central Committee Chairman Vice President U Myint Swe delivered a speech.
In his speech, the Vice President said the day’s meeting was held for the successful organizing and holding of the 2020 73rd Anniversary of Union Day. He said the Central Committee was formed with 14 members by the Office of the President, and with himself as Chairman, on 21 October 2019 to successfully observe the day in accordance with five national objectives with full political essence.
He said that a 19-member management committee led by the Nay Pyi Taw Council Chairman and 14 sub-committees to implement the directives of the central committee were also formed.
The Vice President said the five national objectives of the 73rd Union Day are to protect and defend sovereignty for non-disintegration of the Union and unity of ethnic people through collective strength of all the ethnic people, continuing the peace process with Union spirit until success is achieved, strive towards rule of law and for the safety and security of the people through the unity of all citizens, preventing dangers of illegal drugs as a national duty and elevating the living standards of the people, striving towards establishment of a Constitution that is in accord with a Federal Democratic Union.
The Vice President highlighted the historical significance of Union Day, by saying independence was achieved after Bogyoke Aung San and ethnic national leaders held the Panglong Conference of 12 February 1947 and signed the Panglong Agreement in unity. The Union Day that depicts the unity of ethnic national brothers and sisters has been held every year and this is the 73rd year, he said.
The Vice President said the Panglong Conference was the catalyst for ethnic solidarity and independence and drawing upon this crucial historic lesson, the Union Peace Conference – 21st Century Panglong was initiated to achieve the national reconciliation and peace that Myanmar desperately needs. He said the nation would only truly develop when there is genuine peace.
The Vice President said one of the main reasons for celebrating Union Day is to remind successive generations that independence was achieved because of the unity of all ethnic people. He said Myanmar is full of diverse ethnicities each with their own unique language and culture and of different religions and this coexistence is what makes the country a Union. He said the customs and culture of ethnic people must be preserved perpetually and this is why they will be displayed in Union Day celebrations.
The Vice President said the 73rd Union Day event will be held in two parts with the first half including the flag hoisting ceremony and reading messages in the morning and the second half involving a dinner reception and entertainment in the evening.
The Vice President said 15 decisions were made at the meeting on 1 April, 2019 for evaluating the preparations of the 72nd Union Day and he urged all relevant committees and subcommittees to work closely to implement them.
For the people to know the essence of the national aims set by the Central Committee, arrangements are to be made for state-owned media like radio, television, newspaper and periodicals to broadcast and publish entertainment and informative programmes, said the Vice President.
He said subcommittees need to have Plan A as well as Plan B for all matters related to holding of the 73rd Union Day. In order to successfully hold the Union Day ceremony with full political essence all are urged to work together to make this year the best based on past years experiences.
Next, Dr Myo Aung explained the preparations made for the upcoming Union Day ceremony and other subcommittee members explained the progress of their respective assigned sectors. The Vice President responded to all discussions and suggestions and concluded the meeting with a closing speech.
