THE Yangon City Development Committee will build sewage treatment plants throughout the commercial city in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Daw Khin Aye Myint of YCDC said: “The current sewage treatment system in Yangon is no longer able to treat sewage water. We will build sewage treatment plants near Yangon River, Bago River, Hlaing River and Ngamoeyeik Creek in designated zones.”JICA’s greater Yangon plan covers the construction of sewage treatment plants around the city, including Pabedan, Kyuaktada, Botahtaung, Pazundaung, Dala, Tamwe, Bahan, North Okkalapa, Thingyangyun and Mingaladon townships.
“The new sewage treatment plants are expected to cover 49 per cent of Yangon’s total population,” Daw Khin Aye Myint said. “Currently, only six townships in Yangon have septic tank systems,” said a YCDC spokesperson. “The jacking method will be used for future septic treatment system.”
