Dr Than Tun Aung, the CEO of Daily Eleven and Eleven Media Group, has been sued under the telecommunications law by the Yangon Region cabinet for libel, according to U Phyo Min Thein, chief minister of the cabinet.
The article that prompted the legal action was titled, “One year after the election,” published in the 6 November issue of Daily Eleven, which the minister described as tantamount to defaming the regional government.
The 6 November opinion article written by Dr Than Tun Aung accused the Yangon Region chief minister of “rosy relations with corrupt officials” and of wearing a US$200,000 Patek Philippe watch that was described as a gift from a convicted drugs lord.
At a press conference held last night at the cabinet’s office, U Phyo Min Thein reiterated that the watch he wears is a more affordable Rolex watch bought by his wife, not a Patek Phillipe as described by Dr Than Tun Aung.
The region cabinet prosecuted the Eleven CEO at Tamwe Police Station with Case No. Pa 893/2016 under section 66 (D) of the telecommunications law.
“As Dr Than Tun Aung didn’t stop writing until this morning, the cabinet sued him for defanation at the Tamwe township police station”, the minister said.
