MYANMAR Independent Living Initiatives held a workshop on 1 November to explain the voting process to people with disabilities. The workshop was held at the Dinga Hotel in Mahaaungmyae Township, Mandalay. The workshop was attended by officials of the Social Welfare Department, parliament members, civic organisations and journalists.
MILI members spoke about the challenges eligible voters with disabilities face in Myanmar and how to alleviate these challenges on voting day. The politicians and other attendees at the workshop discussed possible solutions.
According to the 2014 national Myanmar, there are 2.3 million people with disabilities in Myanmar, comprising 4.6 percent of the total population of 50 million.
The Union Election Commission has allowed voters with disabilities to be accompanied at the polling booth by other voters to help in the voting process, said a Social Welfare Department official.
