Village electrification costs recouped in Mandalay

THE Mandalay Electric Corporation has successfully covered the costs of supplying electricity to villages with the use of money collected via the bills of commercial users, according to corporation General Manager U Soe Lwin.
With the rise in the number of rural electrification projects in Mandalay Region, electricity distribution to rural areas has cost the corporation K17 per unit in losses as rural users pay K35 per unit while the standard price of one unit is K52, said the general manager. A unit of electricity for commercial use is K75, he added.
Whatever the losses may be, works to electrify rural regions will continue with the use of funding from the government, said regional Minister for Electricity, Energy and Construction U Zarni Aung.
Embezzlement cases involving rural electrification activities have been reported, added the regional minister.
Statistics show that 3,515 of 4,780 villages in Mandalay Region have been electrified and 1,265 villages remain to be serviced.—Aung Thant Khaing
