Nay Pyi Taw, 3 July —A ceremony to launch the campaign for reduction of mother and child mortality rates was held at the City Hall in Magway on Friday, with an opening speech by Vice President Dr Sai Mauk Kham.
In his speech, the vice president said that Myanmar is included in the lowest of life expectancy in Southeast Asia due to high mortality rates in states and regions where mortality rate hits 36.43 percent in 2015.
Although Myanmar has a life expectancy of 66.8 years, that of Magway Region stands at 60.6 years while its mortality rates for children under the age of one and of five are the highest in the country, according to the vice president.
The vice president added that almost 65,000 children under the age of five die in Myanmar in one year, causing losses for families as well as the country.
Then, the vice president urged different levels of departmental officials, the public, UN agencies and civil society organizations to cooperate for the reduction of mortality rates in the region.
The ceremony included a workshop on reduction of mother and child mortality rates, prevention of TB, HIV, Diabete, heart disease and many other diseases.
After the vice president’s speech, Magway Region Chief Minister U Phone Maw Shwe and Deputy Minister for Health Dr Win Myint reported to the vice president on plans to reduce the mortality rates.
After the ceremony, the vice president cordially greeted the attendees. MNA
