VICE-President Dr Sai Mauk Kham addressed the opening ceremony of the 8th Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights ( APCRSHR) at Myanmar International Convention Centre-2 in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
In his speech the Vice-President called for ensuring the involvement of stakeholders in the process of policy formulation, thereby putting women within reach of reproductive and sexual health and rights.
He said that unwanted pregnancies can be avoided by enabling everyone to have access to quality health care services as unintended pregnancies and related risks were reduced as much as one-third in the world thanks to family planning and reproductive health.
Myanmar is committed to the implementation of family planning 2020 to promote the rights of women and children in cooperation with the international community, he added.
Next, Ms. Yoriko Yasukawa, director of UNFPA’s Asia Pacific Office, and Dr. Raj Karim, President of the Malaysian AIDS Council extended greetings.
In the evening, the Vice-President hosted dinner to participants of the conference.
The 8th APCRSHR is aimed at examining the responses to challenges of environmental conservation, climate change, aging population and reproductive health posed to all countries. The conference, set to last for four days, includes several formats including plenary sessions, youth seminars, paper-reading sessions and educative talks.
Myanmar is the eighth host country after the Philippines in 2001, Thailand in 2003, Malaysia in 2005, India in 2007, China in 2009, Indonesia in 2011 and the Philippines in 2014.
