President U Htin Kyaw and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi attended the 2016 Kathina Robe Offering Ceremony of the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar held at the Sasana Beikmandaw of the Uppatasanti Pagoda and offered Kathina robes to monks yesterday morning.
Kathina, a Buddhist holiday, takes place every year in the four weeks following the end of the rainy season.
It is a traditional time for laypeople to offer robes and other necessities to monks.
Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee chief Presiding Monk of Bhamo Kyaungtaik Abhidhaja Maharattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Mahasaddhamajotika, Dr Bhanddanta Kumara Bhivamsa and abbots attended the ceremony.
On hand to offer Kathina robes to monks were State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Vice President U Myint Swe and wife, Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw U Win Myint and wife, Union Chief Justice U Tun Tun Oo, Chairman of Constitutional Tribunal U Myo Nyunt and wife, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services and Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice Senior General Soe Win and wife, Deputy Speaker of Amyotha Hluttaw U Aye Tha Aung and wife, union ministers, the union attorney-general, the union auditor-general and the chairman of Union Civil Service Board and their wives, the chairman of Nay Pyi Taw Council, deputy ministers and officials.
At the start of the ceremony, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi offered a meal in an emerald bowl along with flowers, water and lights.
The president and the congregation then received nine precepts form the Bhamo Sayadaw and listened to the recitation of Parittas by monks.
Afterwards, the president offered Kathina robes and offertories to Maha Visutarama Zaygon monastery Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maharatthaguru Bhaddanta Kavisara.
Next, the state counsellor offered Kathina robes and offertories to the Bhamo Sayadaw.
Then, Vice President U Myint Swe and wife, Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw U Win Myint and wife, Chief Justice of the Union U Tun Tun Oo, Chairman of Constitutional Tribunal U Myo Nyunt and wife, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services and Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice Senior General Soe Win and wife, Deputy Speaker of Amyotha Hluttaw U Aye Tha Aung and wife, Pyithu Hluttaw Commission for the Assessment of Legal Affairs and Special Issues chairman U Shwe Mann and wife and union ministers offered robes to monks.
Later, the president and the congregation listened to a sermon by Chief Presiding Monk of Minkyaung Pahtamapyan Pariyatti Sarthintaik Agga Maha Panditta Bhaddanta Candima Bhivamsa and shared the merit gained.
Offertories and cash worth over Ks58million were donated to the monks at the ceremony. — Myanmar News Agency
