Union Government announces cancellation of development projects near Shwedagon Pagoda

Nay Pyi Taw, 7 July —The Union Government issued an announcement on Tuesday, cancelling the development projects at former National Defence College and No.1 Motor Transport Battalion in Dagon Township in Yangon.
The Ministry of Defence had invited tenders for development projects at these sites to make Yangon a modern city, according to the announcement.
The tenders were won by Shwetaung Development Company, Adventure Myanmar Tours and Incentives Co Ltd, Thukha Yadana Company and Marga Landmark Development Co Ltd, and Myanmar Investment Commission also permitted the projects in accordance with the law.
As the sites are located near to the Shwedagon Pagoda, the public are concerned about the pagoda and people and experts sent petitions to the president to halt the development projects while Myanmar Investment Commission and the Ministry of Defence recommended cancelling the project.
The government also does not want to damage the religious edifices and cultural heritages including the Shwedagon Pagoda for development and held negotiations with the companies to cancel the projects.
As the companies also gave their consent to the cancellation of the projects in Dagon Township in Yangon, the government issued the announcement on cancellation of project on Tuesday.  MNA
