THE Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) and private sector representatives have taken steps to solve the serious delays that are currently impacting Myanmar’s trade capability.
UMFCCI President U Win Aung held a meeting with services providers, customs brokers, freight forwarders and container truck owners to help the Government overcome recent backlog problems.
U Win Aung said the group formed a working committee that would report its findings and recommendations to Yangon Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein, and related government ministries as soon as possible.
“Congestion and delays in loading and unloading processes at Yangon’s sea ports undermine Myanmar’s economic growth by slowing down export and import capability,” U Win Aung said.
“The private sector must contribute to help improve vital areas of overseas trade including custom clearances, transportation and port management.”
The working committee comprises Port owners, the Myanmar International Freight Forwarders’ Association, the Myanmar Mercantile Marine Development Association, the Myanmar Customs Brokers Association and the Myanmar Container Trucks Association.
The committee members will work out of at the UMFCCI headquarters in Lanmadaw Township and report back to the Government within two weeks. It will also cooperate with the Government to implement the agreed plan.
The group yesterday agreed the most urgent tasks would be 1: To compile a list and make a report on the containers that are left unclaimed for over 60 days. 2: Devise quick turn-around methods to clear out and replace empty and unused containers. 3: Get shipping companies to report detailed freight logistics activities. 4: Customs clearance and containers loading- unloading processes to continue  24-hours a day. 5:Report recommendations to the Chief Minister of Yangon and the related ministries as soon as possible.
