UEC, ministries hold coord meeting on 2020 General Election

Union Election Commission (UEC) and ministries held a coordination meeting yesterday morning at the UEC Office in Nay Pyi Taw to conduct General Elections (GE) 2020. The meeting was attended by UEC Chairman U Hla Thein and members, officials from commission office, directors general, deputy permanent secretaries, deputy directors general and official from12 ministries related to the election.

The UEC Chairman said the meeting was being held to meet with ministries who would be cooperating and conducting the GE 2020. A strategic program (2019-2022) has been drawn up in relation to the GE 2020 election process works and the program was drawn based on post-election suggestions of relevant election sub-commissions of all levels, political parties, civil society organizations and election monitoring groups. The cooperation and participation of relevant ministries play an important role in implementing the strategic program. The Commission would start preparing voters list in 2019 and only when the trio of commission, General Administration Department and Immigration & Population Department conduct this work can a true and correct voters list be achieved.

The commission was holding elections under the five norms of free, fair, transparent, credible and reflecting the will of the people and members of election sub-commissions at all levels and personnel on duty from ministries are to cooperate fully. Hluttaw Election Law section 85 states that commission, sub commission members and personnel serving in election duties are serving the State.

Similarly Hluttaw Election Law section 87 states that commission, sub commission members at all levels and their members, Constitutional Tribunal members, polling station heads, members could not be charged through civil or criminal law for discharging their duties in accordance with the law to the best of their abilities. As such, they were to conduct their election duties and responsibilities courageously and truthfully in accordance with rules, regulations and procedures. The strategic program has 11 chapters and it has been distributed in advance so that ministries know their roles and assistance they have to provide. Relevant ministries were urged to cooperate fully towards the successful holding of the GE 2020, said the UEC Chairman.

Next, UEC Office Director General U Khin Maung Oo explained about arrangements made for GE 2020 and status of ministerial department wise cooperation specified in the strategic program chapters. Officials from ministerial departments participated in relevant sector wise discussions and suggestions.
