UEC chairman, Union FM meet special adviser to UNSG

THE Union Election Commission will make every effort to ensure that the general elections on November 8 are free and fair, its chairman told the special adviser to the secretary-general of the United Nations in Myanmar yesterday.
The meeting focused on security measures, the postponement of elections in some areas, local and foreign election observers, fair and balanced media coverage and ways to avoid the politicisation of religion by political parties.
Elections will be delayed in five townships in Myanmar, Myanmar News Agency reported last night, as well as “other constituencies.”
The chairman spoke of allowing local and foreign observers to have access to the polls and inviting the election commissions from the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The general elections are scheduled to be held on 8 November.
Mr Vijay Nambiar, Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Myanmar also called on Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Wunna Maung Lwin at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday.
They discussed the government’s efforts towards the development of Myanmar as well as further cooperation between Myanmar and the United Nations.–Myanmar News Agency
