THE WELCOMING WAGON — President U Htin Kyaw and wife host welcoming ceremony for Laotian president

President U Htin Kyaw and his wife Daw Su Su Lwin held a welcoming ceremony yesterday on the lawn of the Presidential Palace in Nay Pyi Taw for the president of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic Mr. Bounnhang Vorachith and his wife Mrs. Khammeung Vorachith.
After the welcoming ceremony, State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi cordially greeted the visiting Laotian president inside the Presidential Palace.
A Myanmar-Laos bilateral meeting followed, attended by the two Presidents, the State Counsellor, Union Ministers U Kyaw Tint Swe, Dr Pe Myint, Thura U Aung Ko, U Thant Sin Maung, Dr Myo Thein Gyi and U Win Khaing, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Tin and visiting Laotian ministers and officials.
During the meeting, both sides discussed cooperation and the promotion of peace and stability in border regions, repairing damage to border posts caused by severe weather conditions and floods, resumption of Yangon-Vientiane and Luang Prabang-Bagan direct flights, reviews of existing agreements between the two countries and matters related to supporting each other in regional and international arena.
Next, the two Presidents witnessed the signing of an agreement on the Myanmar-Laos Friendship Bridge by Union Minister for Foreign Affairs Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Laotian Foreign Affairs Minister Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith.
President U Htin Kyaw and his wife Daw Su Su Lwin then hosted a luncheon in honour of the Laotian President and wife.
Afterwards, the visiting Laotian President and party visited the Uppatasanti Pagoda and the white elephant shed.
Mrs. Khammeuang Vorachith, wife of the Laotian President, visited the Gems Museum.
In the evening, the Laotian President and his wife concluded their one-day visit to Myanmar and left from Nay Pyi Taw for Vientiane, Laos.
President U Htin Kyaw paid a State visit to Laos on 6 May, his first foreign trip after taking office in April.
The Laotian President became the third foreign leader who has visited Myanmar since the  new government has been in place. The Singaporean Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Loong and Mongolian President Mr. Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj visited in June.
Mr. Bounnahang Vorachith has visited Myanmar twice, in 2003 and 2004, while he served as Laotian Prime Minister. He made a third visit in 2015 as the Vice President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Yesterday was his fourth visit to Myanmar.
