The opportunity of a lifetime

It took more than a century for us to pride ourselves in the possession of a democratic icon in the political arena of our country. As a nascent democracy, our country has a lot to do in its pursuit of national prosperity. In doing so, compromise and negotiation are undisputed elements of a healthy democracy with a sustainable and vibrant economy.
At this crucial juncture, there must be strong public support for the government’s priority to the realisation of political and economic stability, without which the protection of national interest will be a merely unrealistic goal.
When it comes to safeguarding the country and religion, everyone is nationalistic to a fault. The world is full of stories of how aggressive nationalism ends up. The plight of the people in the Middle East is a telling example of why political and economic stability is of the essence in safeguarding national interest.
Despite other disagreements, all stakeholders engaged in nation building need to find some common ground on the question of national development. In this respect, they need to demonstrate their love for the country with boundless enthusiasm. A real national hero will make more sacrifices in the end.
Now that the 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference will be held under the leadership of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who has won strong support from the people and the ethnic organisations, this peace initiative is hailed as a huge step to end more than six decades of internal armed conflict. This occasion is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity given the right leader and the right time.
