Thai pilgrims top visits to Shwedagon


Pilgrims from Thailand have topped the table of visitors to Shwedagon in the past three months, with officials at the pagoda saying that a total of 79,249 tourists visited the country’s most well-known religious edifice during that period.
The number of visitors from Thailand totaled 20,253, followed by China and Korea with 7,014 and 5,604 respectively.
Tourists are required to pay K8,000 (nearly US$8) to visit the historic pagoda in Yangon.
Over 500,000 tourists visited Myanmar from January to June 2015, with the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism expecting five million visits to the
country. Myanmar has 1,167 hotels and guest houses whose combined rooms total 45,563.–Ko Moe (GNLM)
