Tenders will be invited for 10 projects including the upgrading of the Yangon circular railway this month, said an official from Myanma Railways.
Currently, Myanma Railways is planning to upgrade
the railway and improve the drainage system to prevent flooding.
Myanma Railways will also invite tenders for upgrading railway crossings, railway signals and communication buildings, constructing of gate huts, upgrading of railway stations and platforms, upgrading of DEMU coaches, supplying electricity and other urban engineering activities.
Myanma Railways will increase the speed of trains from 20 kph to 40 kph, which will require fortifying of the tracks.
Thousands of people rely on the circular trains in the city of Yangon, so an upgrade of the railway system is being undertaken with the assistance of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The Ministry of Transport and Communications and JICA have been conducting the development of a railway system since 2014 to increase the number of passengers. Japan estimated that there will be about 3 million passengers in Myanmar relying on the circular trains by 2020.
