THE Ta’ang community – an ethnic minority group in Myanmar – celebrated its traditional New Year in Namsan, Shan State, on 19 December.
The New Year festival was the first of its kind in the town for the community, attracting residents of villages in the surrounding hills.
During the two-day festival, Ta’ang youths performed traditional dances.
At the festival, U Maung Kyaw, the chairman of the Central Committee of the Palaung Self-Administered Zone, gave the opening speech, and U Saw Lwin explained the history of the Ta’ang people and their traditional culture. U Shwe Kyein explained the meaning of the Ta’ang New Year.
The Ta’ang National flag was flown at the festival, a traditional orchestra performed at midnight.
