One of the six suspects arrested in an area clearance operation made by Tatmataw columns on 14 October died on the way to the hospital three days later. The death sparked an official investigation as well as numerous discussions on social media.
According to investigators, six people suspected in the violent attacks of 9 October on border police outposts were arrested in Ridar village of Maungtaw Township on 14 October. Among them were Khawrimular, 60, his three sons and two of his brothers. All were jailed at Kyeinchaung Police Station. After taking away Khawrimular for interrogation on the evening of October 16, Tatmataw troops brought him back to Kyeinchaung Police Station on the morning of 17 October. On the way back, the suspect grabbed a firearm from a soldier. Responsible personnel managed to subdue Khawrimular, but he lost consciousness as a result. On the way to the hospital in a car, he died near the village of Longdone at about 5:30am on 17 October, it is learnt.
Authorities have opened an investigation into the death, in accord with the law.—Myanmar News Agency
