Recovery work under way for Namhsam fire victims

Union Minister U Hla Tun, accompanied by the Shan State chief minister and deputy ministers, visited Namhsam Township in Lashio, Shan State, on 13 February to provide relief to victims of recent fires.
At a monastery where the victims are being provided temporary accommodation, the union minister was briefed on the distribution of relief items and arrangements for rehabilitation.
The minister urged officials to speed up rehabilitation measures as the relief and recovery are gaining momentum, stressing the importance of systematic approaches to town planning to ensure easy manoeuvering for fire engines.
He pledged governmental assistance to rehabilitation work in cooperation with members of the public, urging officials to supervise building works and complete them before monsoon season ushers in.
The fire victims have enough food reserves to last three months, he added.    The Ministry of Border Affairs donated K10 million to the victims, and Shwe Taung Co. Lt donated bags of cement. Families affiliated with the army, the navy and the air forces donated corrugated iron sheet to the fire victims. —Myanmar News Agency
