The general election scheduled for 8 November is a key event for the country, the speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw said Thursday in a meeting with local people in the town of Toungoo, Bago Division.
Thura U Shwe Mann stressed the need to choose worthy candidates who will devote themselves to the interests of the region and the country as a whole.
The speaker urged local management committees to make combined efforts to ensure that elections are free and fair.
Local officials and parliamentarians took part in discussions on regional development.
Speaker Thura U Shwe Mann also met local people in the town of Yeni and gave instructions on regional development activities.
Before the meeting, the speaker paid homage to the Presiding Sayadaw of Shwezeti Monastery and offered robes and monastic items to the members of the Sangha.
