The 12th Tazaungdine hot-air balloon festival has begun at the Maha Arnthtoo Kantha Pagoda in Pyin Oo Lwin, Mandalay and will be continue until November 15. This year’s event includes a photography contest with cash prizes.
Day and night competitions will be held during the festival, including hot-air balloon competition, robe weaving (known as matho thingan), sepaktakraw competition and a small aircraft demonstration. At the event, vendors will sell regional foods such as cream balls, fruit, Khawpote, fried tofu and assorted jams.
This year, the Tazaungdine festival has attracted the interest of professional photographers from across the country and around the world.
Professional photographers will compete in both a day and night photo contest. The competitions will award prizes in both categories. The top prizes for the night competitors will include a trophy and Ks1.2 million to the first place winner, a trophy and Ks0.8 million to the second place winner, a trophy and Ks0.5 million to the third place winner, a trophy and Ks0.2 million to the fourth place winner, a trophy and Ks0.1 million to the fifth place winner and Ks0.08 million each to the sixth and seventh place winners.
For the day competitors, a trophy and Ks0.5 million will be awarded for first place, a trophy and Ks0.3 million for second place, a trophy and Ks0.2 million for third place, a trophy and Ks0.1 million for fourth place, a trophy and Ks0.08 million for fifth place, a trophy and Ks0.07 million for sixth place, a trophy and Ks0.07 million for seventh place and a trophy and Ks0.05 million for eighth place. The contest will not allow photographers to take photos using drones, organizers said.
A total of 132 hot-air balloons will be released at the festival. The festival will start at 8am on 11 November with a small aircraft demonstration. Hot-air balloons will be released the same day at 12pm and the night hot-air balloons will be released at 6pm.
