Onion prices hit a 10-year high in early July, according to a report of City News yesterday.
Usually, local onion prices remain steady during June and July. This year, however, onion prices ranged from Ks900 to Ks1,250 per viss (3.6 pounds), said an onion businessman.
An average of 180,000 viss of onions (a viss equals 3.6 pounds) reached Yangon market in 3-7 July.
Despite relatively high local onion prices they are still affordable enough and preferred by Myanmar shoppers enough so that imported onions do not threaten their market share.—GNLM
