PRESIDENT U Htin Kyaw addressed the opening of the 11th Asia-Europe Meeting Summit in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia yesterday.
In his address the President noted that ASEM has been gaining over the past 20 years its vitality and relevance in bringing Asia and Europe closer by enhancing connectivity in all dimension, bringing together not only government officials but also parliamentarians, business communities and peoples from both continents.
The President called for widening the focus on areas of common interests including connectivity, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, non-traditional security challenges, rule of law, anti-drugs trafficking, anti-corruption, inclusive growth and disaster risk management.
Before concluding his speech, the President reaffirmed Myanmar’s commitment to host the next ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in the second half of 2017, saying that the meeting would offer ASEM ministers to witness the exciting democratic transition taking place in the country.
During the opening ceremony Mongolian President Mr. Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, who is the Chair of the Summit, European Council President Mr. Donald Tusk, Slovak Prime Minister Mr. Robert Fico and New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Mr. Murray McCully also spoke on the occasion.
After the opening ceremony the President together with heads of delegations from Asian and European countries met with delegates to 9th Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership (ASEP) Meeting, the Asia-Europe Business Forum (AEBF), Model ASEM and Asia-Europe People’s Forum.
Next, the President took part in the two plenary sessions under the titles of ‘Two decades of partnership: Taking stock and looking forward’ and ‘Promoting ASEM partnership for greater connectivity’.
In the evening the President attended a Mongolian traditional dinner hosted by the Mongolian President in honour of the heads of the delegations of Asian and European countries in Ulaanbaatar.
Before the dinner, President U Htin Kyaw enjoyed demonstrations of archery, horse riding and wrestling, three sports of the Naadam sports festival of Mongolia together with heads of delegations of Asian and European countries.
