Plans underway for International Day of Democracy on 15 Sept

Nay Pyi Taw — Parliament is the lifeblood of a country and an engine for democratic reform, Speaker Thura U Shwe Mann told a capacity enhancement meeting in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday.
The speaker of Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (Union Parliament) and Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) spoke of plans to enable parliamentarians to enhance their capacities, adding that arrangements are underway to observe the International Day of Democracy at Pyidaungsu Hluttaw on 15 September with the theme of ‘Public Participation for Democracy,’ as set by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The speaker said that public participation plays a vital role in achieving democratic reforms and said he looked forward to seeing engagement among youth during this year’s International Day of Democracy, which falls on 15 September.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Inter-Parliamentary Unit (IPU), the United Kingdom’s House of Commons, the Hans Seidel Foundation, the Cuso International Organisation and the Myanmar Scholarship Alumini Association (MSAA) discussed plans for capacity building programmes.
Before the meeting, Speaker Thura U Shwe Mann had met with Cuba’s Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Victor Daniel Ramirez Pena.—MNA
