Homeless draw lots for housing in Yangon

HOMELESS people in Yangon drew lots to rent apartments at the new Maha Bandoola Housing Complex in South Dagon Township.
Since the buildings are between 70 and 90 per cent complete, the winners of the lotteries are expected to move into the apartments in early April, said U Nay Win, director of the Yangon Region Government.
The winners of the lotteries will be announced at respective township general administration offices and the Housing Development Department daily.
A total of 35,491 people have applied for 1,152 rental apartments at the housing complex. Tenants will have to pay K30,000 per month for rent.
According to the Yangon Region government, leases can be revoked if tenants fail to follow it’s the terms of their tenancy, which prohibit re-renting or selling the apartment.
There are 24 apartments in each four-storey building in the complex, and each unit measures 22 feet by 25 feet.
A total of 26 companies that won the tender for the construction of the buildings have constructed the complex in cooperation with the Housing Development Department. —Thi Thi MIn
