Parboiled rice exports earned nearly US$ 4 million in ten months

Over 10,000 tonnes of parboiled rice were exported to foreign countries over the past ten months in the current fiscal year 2016-2017, attaining nearly US$ 4 million, according to the Commerce Ministry.
The parboiled rice exports mainly flowed into the Russian market. About 500 tonnes of parboiled rice each were shipped to America and Canada this fiscal year. Myanmar’s parboiled rice also enters the European market, fetching US$460 to $470 per tonne.
Over 3,000 tonnes of parboiled rice are monthly demanded by the Russian market. However, only about 1,500 tonnes are supplied due to lack of production.
The earnings of a tonne of parboiled rice exceeds over 30 per cent of that of low quality rice (Aemahta) because of its higher quality, said U Thaung Win, a rice miller from Hlaingthaya industrial zone.
More parboiled rice mills need to be established as the parboiled rice has already garnered the international market and are being offered a good price. The Commerce Ministry has no plans to set up the parboiled rice mills since agribusiness was already privatised, said U Khin Maung Lwin, the assistant secretary of the Ministry of Commerce.
Previously, there were three parboiled rice mills in  Einme, Kyaiklat and Bogale in Ayeyawady Region. And now, more parboiled rice is likely to be exported abroad with an expanded nine mills.
Parboiled rice previously resulted in a foul odour when the rice was soaked into cold water during processing, resulting in a decrease in quality. Odourless parboiled rice was produced later on with the assistance of advanced technology, it is learnt. —200
