Onion growers in Taungtha Township have turned into a modern water spray system with the use of pipes, in order to grow more onions in farmland.
“When compared with irrigation system with drains on the farmland, this new system has assisted us to grow more onions,” said U Thein Tun.
The farmers grow onion at the end of December every year as a summer crop.  Onion is the local product of Taungtha Township.
The price of onion hiked last year, reaching K4,000 per viss, increasing from K400 per viss previous years.
However, the farmers did not see high profits as the price increased only when they had sold their crops to the brokers, according to local farmers.—Lin Let Kyae (Taungtha)
