AN expansion of the 218-mile long Myitkyina-Sumprabum-PutaO road is currently being carried out by local authorities with the use of Union government funds for the 2016-2017 fiscal year.
With the aim of providing better transportation services to road users local authorities began implementing the development project during the 2012-2013 FY, expanding the width of the road from 12 feet to 24 feet as well as paving the road to ensure safer travel and constructing three RC bridges below the 50 feet spans.
The original road was built during the Second World War era and has reportedly been badly in need of repair and maintenance since.  It was upgraded for the first time in 1953. After the first expansion of the road vehicles under three tons were allowed to drive from Myitkyina to Sumprabum.
The road has been on the Ministry of Construction’s list of priority roads to expand since the 1966-1967 FY.
