Myanmar’s sesame hopes for good price in Chinese market

SesameeeePre-monsoon sesame plantations are being harvested in Yedashe Township, Bago Region.
Local farmers cultivate sesame on the largest acres of farmlands apart from paddy, sugarcane and beans along the banks of Sittoung River.
They grow sesame and groundnut before summer paddy.
This year, most of the sesame plantations may boost production of per-acre yield due to favourable weather.
“At present, we sell sesame K30,000 per basket in the market. The Chinese market is still monopolized by sesame from Vietnam. If sale of Vietnam’s sesame is down, Myanmar’s sesame will get good prices,” an oil mill entrepreneur in Swa said.
Now, black sesame is more marketable than Baygyar strain sesame.
