The 2015 International Day of Co-operatives was celebrated Saturday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Cooperatives here, with Vice President U Nyan Tun providing opening remarks.
This year’s event was held under the theme of ‘Choose co-operative, Choose equality’ to increase awareness of co-operatives and promote the movement’s ideals of international solidarity, economic efficiency, equality, and world peace.
The vice president said the International Co-operatives Alliance first celebrated the International Day in 1923, with Myanmar observing it for the 21st time this year.
He said the Ministry of Cooperative has disbursed cash loans of more than K 388 billion and sold 154,289 units of machinery in installments to over 3 million households in rural areas across the country as of the first week of July.
Pro-rector Dr Htay Htay Lwin read out a message from the ICA, followed by an award ceremony to recognize outstanding cooperatives.
