Myanmar celebrates UNIDO

MYANMAR has been promoting the role of the elderly by organising ceremonies marking the UN International Day of Older Persons, Union Minister for Labour and Immigration U Thein Swe said at this year’s event at the Myanmar International Convention Centre II in Nay Pyi Taw on Saturday.
Being a member of the United Nations, Myanmar holds such ceremonies on the International Day of Older Persons which falls on 1 October, the union minister added.
The union minister explained in his address that Myanmar has planned to approve a bill to help the elderly enjoy healthcare services and social benefits in accordance with the five fundamental principles for the elderly adopted by the UN.
An official read out the UN Secretary General’s message for the event and honorariums were also presented to Myanmar’s oldest grandpa and grandma at the ceremony.
The government has vowed to cooperate with local and international NGOs for life security and prevention of elderly abuses and discrimination against them. The theme for the event is Take a Stand Against Ageism.
