The price of muskmelon declined because of low demand of China, causing financial difficulties for muskmelon growers, according to the Mandalay fruit market.
The muskmelons are mostly cultivated in Mandalay Region and the price is solely dependent on China market. China merchants set the price depending on the production and supply of its neighbouring countries.
Similarly, the watermelon price dropped by nearly Ks4,000 when compared to that of last year, resulting from excessive supply. About 200 to 300 trucks loaded with watermelon enter the Muse market daily. The watermelon price last year was Ks10,000, whereas it fetched only Ks6,000 this year. But the price in Muse is higher than that offered by local market, said a watermelon grower.
About 200,000 tonnes of watermelons are yearly exported to China, according to the Myanmar Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Producer and Exporter Association (MFVP).
