MPT offers free data services for LINE app

Yangon, 29 July—Myanma Posts and Telecommunications and Japan’s LINE Corporation launched a joint promotion Wednesday under which MPT will waive data usage fees for use of the instant messaging application.
At a press conference in Yangon, Mr Takashi Shigeno, marketing manager of MPT-KDDI Summit Global Myanmar Co., said the promotion was aimed at customers using MPT’s Swe Thahar plan.
“We will provide free data usage for main features of LINE Messenger and a free download of the application for all MPT Swe Thahar customers from 29 July to 30 September,” Mr Shigeno said.
“Customers may take advantage of MPT’s free data offering for chatting, sending and receiving stickers, making and receiving free video calls, and photo sharing. Furthermore, users can download almost all LINE family apps.”
MPT, under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, also launched its official account on LINE that day to provide the latest information and promotions to customers, according to U Tun Aye Maung, marketing strategy manager of MPT-KSGM.
The LINE app is available for download at
LINE is one of the world’s most popular social media and instant messaging applications. It is used in more than 230 countries by more than 205 million monthly active users, according to the company.
In cooperation with Japan’s leading all-round telecom operator KSGM, MPT plans to double the number of base stations to more than 5,000 by the end of March 2016, Mr Takashi Shigeno said.
MPT and KSGM signed a joint operations agreement last July in order to expand and improve Myanmar’s telecommunications network.—GNLM
