Mon state government and Seribu Bio-System, a Malaysian company, will jointly conduct crab farming in Mon State, said U Tun Htay, the minister for Mon State Agriculture, Livestock and Communication.
“This Malaysian company has technical know-how in the crab farming business”, U Tun Htay said. “We believe that this joint venture will bring fruitful results”.
The crab farming effort will be carried out on 5,000 acres of land, including the mangrove areas in Mon State. Its production will be widely distributed to domestic as well as foreign markets, U Tun Htay said.
This crab culture will be eco-friendly and will also result in conservation efforts in the mangrove areas.
Mud crab farming is popular in Southeast Asian countries. The local consumers prefer hard shell crabs to the soft shell ones.—200
