The Meiktila hiking team has only reached the 11,000-foot snow-capped Mount Phonekanrazi in Putao Township because of an ice and snow storm, said U Tun Lwin, the information officer for the Meiktila hiking team.
Mount Phonekanrazi is 11920 feet high. The Meiktila hiking team, comprising 20 members, left Meiktila for Putao on 3 March, where they slept overnight. On the following day, the team traveled to Shan Khaung village in Putao Township by three-wheel motorbikes and started climbing the following day. “All 20 members, including hiker U Win Shine, reached the ice camp, which is at a height of 9,700 feet, on 8 March. Then, they were faced with the poor weather conditions.”
As a consequence, only six members of the hiking and mountaineering team reached the 11,000-foot height of Mount Phonekanrazi. “The mapping team told us to stop continuous climbing of the Mount Phonekanrazi,” said said U Tun Lwin. In 2018, the team hiked Mount Popa, Mount Hasin, Mount Myinmahti, Mount Pyatkhayay, and Mount Sein Kanaut Mya Kanaut.
