THE demand for hand-woven mats from Inwa has reportedly been growing rapidly as the warmer weather takes effect across the country.
The traditional-mats are made from thin reed, a material favoured for its lightness and availability.
“Our workers are currently quite happy as they are earning between K4,000 and K6,000 per day”, said a local mat manufacturer.
Thin reed products are mainly supplied by producers in Kachin State as well as Pantanaw in Ayeyawaddy Division but thin mat manufacturers are using mostly Pantanaw reed products.
Mat weaving and manufacturing is a lucrative home business. The demand for hot-weather friendly mats is always higher in summer, it has been learned from producers.— Tein Taman
