Mass participation imperative for ensuring free, fair, transparent elections

Yangon, 31 Dec — Cooperation among the Union Election Commission, political parties, civil society organizations, media and the people is required to hold free, fair and transparent elections which are  only about 10 months away, said U Tin Aye, Chairman of the Union Election Commission, at a meeting in Kayin State on Tuesday.
In meeting with departmental officials, members of sub-commissions at state, district, township and ward levels, political parties, social organizations and townselders at Thaung-yinn Hall in Myawady, the UEC chairman called on those present to cooperate in the election process for 2015 general elections.
Stressing the need to check voters’ lists before the day of elections, he highlighted the importance of name inclusion in the electoral roll, and affirmed the commission’s commitment to organizing voter education campaigns.
Coordination is underway with the ministry concerned to issue citizenship scrutiny cards to those who do not have these cards, said the chairman, adding that ethnic nationalities living in the certain areas will be included in the voters’ list on the recommendation of respective development support committees.
Regarding advance-voting, the UEC chairman vowed to carry out transparent measures for early voting.
With the aim of ensuring free, fair and credible elections, local and international observers will be invited to monitor the elections, he added.
After answering questions from political parties, the UEC Chairman pledged the commission’s strenuous effort to hold the elections.
On his stay in Myawady, the UEC Chairman visited friendship bridge, Shwe Myin-Wun pagoda, Myawady border trade zone and industrial zone, and held talks on peace and regional development matters with responsible persons from KNU Brigade (7), KNU/KNLA (PC) and DKBA Kalo Htoo Baw.— MNA
