Local businesspeople, government officials hope to promote ‘Made in Myanmar’ designation

Economic experts and business leaders held a panel discussion on Saturday to discuss ways to affix local export products with a “Made in Myanmar” label to improve international opportunities and to counter the Myanmar’s reputation abroad as a poor and conflict-afflicted country.
Economist Dr. Aung Tun Thet argued that the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry should establish a system whereby high quality products can be authorized to use a Made in Myanmar label.
“Previously, Myanmar did not have the opportunity to establish a ‘Made in Myanmar” initiative due to western countries’ sanctions,” he said. “Under the current government, international countries changed their opinions on Myanmar and so we should take advantage of this to create our own products which can bring added status to homegrown brands under a Made in Myanmar designation.”
Currently there is no system to certify Myanmar made products, despite the fact that the country produces a significant number of goods for export.
“In order to manufacture products under a Made in Myanmar brand, local producers need to keep up with technology trends so products can meet international standards. With the ASEAN Economic Community common market initiative approaching, Myanmar needs to prepare its products to enter free and competitive market”, said U Aye Han, paint distributor.
Panel discussion “Make in Myanmar” was held by experts and entrepreneurs at UMFCCI on 2 September.
