Lawmakers hold coord meeting in preparation to form Joint Committee to amend 2008 Constitution

A coordination meeting to form a Joint Committee to amend 2008 Constitution was held in Hluttaw Building in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday afternoon.
The meeting was attended by Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker U T Khun Myat, Amyotha Hluttaw Speaker Mahn Win Khaing Than, Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and Pyithu Hluttaw Deputy Speaker U Tun Aung @ U Tun Tun Hein, representatives of political parties and Tatmadaw in Hluttaw, officials and directors general of Hluttaw offices.
In his opening address Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker U T Khun Myat said that during the First Pyithu Hluttaw term, a joint committee to study the Constitution was formed with a total of 109 representatives from political parties and Tatmadaw representatives in the Hluttaw on 25 July 2013. This was followed by forming of an implementation committee to amend the Constitution on 3 February 2014. This coordination meeting is aimed at formation of a Joint Committee to amend 2008 Constitution as per the decision made on an urgent motion at the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw on 6 February 2019. Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the joint committee will be Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Deputy Speaker and Amyotha Hluttaw Deputy Speaker respectively according to their positions and plan to include a total of 45 members of equal numbers from Pyithu Hluttaw and Amyotha Hluttaw representatives. All are requested to discuss on proportionate inclusion of representatives of political parties and Tatmadaw representatives. Some attendees of this meeting included members of the two committees on amending the Constitution formed in the first Hluttaw term. Based on this experience as well as the past history, present political, peace, socio economic situation of the country, the preparatory joint committee is to be formed without any attachment to any ‘ism,’ region, race and party. Participants are urged to discuss toward achieving beneficial suggestions for the country and the people.
Next, Amyotha Hluttaw Speaker Mahn Win Khaing Than urged the Hluttaw representatives from political parties and Tatmadaw attending this meeting to discuss toward the benefit of the country and people. Discuss and suggest what ought to be without any attachment to party, policy and race said the Amyotha Hluttaw Speaker.
Afterwards, Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Deputy Speaker explained about arrangements planned to form the Preparatory Joint Committee on amending 2008 Constitution which was followed with discussions by representatives from political parties.
Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Speaker U T Khun Myat responded to the explanations and discussions made, decided to conduct a second coordination meeting on 15 February 2019 and delivered a closing speech. —MNA (Translated by Zaw Min)
