Japanese traders eye organic Myanmar avocados

JAPANESE traders have offered to purchase organic Myanmar avocados, according to the Myanmar Fruits and Vegetables Producers Association (MFVPA).
“Japan has extended an offer saying they desire organic avocados. We can’t speak about the details [of the offer] yet. We will be able to export as many avocados as is desired. That said, we are still discussing the sizes and quality of the desired fruit,” said U Soe Than Mindin, chairperson of the MFVPA.
“Although Myanmar produces organic crops, there has been difficulty in establishing a separate organic-only market,” he added.
“We’ve been practising organic agriculture for over 10 years now. We’ve been planting avocados for a long time and still have foreign buyers. Many people are interested in organic methods [of agriculture],” said U Hla Myaing, chair of the Myanmar Organic Agriculture Association.
