Italy finances nomination of Bagan as world heritage site

Italy will provide its third installment of financial assistance for the maintenance of the ancient Pyu cities and the inclusion of the Bagan region on the World Heritage List, according to the Ministry of Culture.
Deputy Minister Daw Sanda Khin, together with Italian ambassador to Myanmar Mr Giorgio Aliberti, went on an inspection tour of the Bagan region on 26 October. The deputy minister called for the preservation of the archaeological value of the ancient architectural features of Bagan’s pagodas.
At the archaeological museum in Bagan, officials from the Italian Development Cooperation Office and UNESCO’s Yangon office discussed the maintenance of cultural heritage sites and cooperation in the promotion of tourism.
Earlier this year, Italy’s financial assistance enabled the Myanmar to have the three ancient Pyu cities of Hanlin, Beikthano and Sri Kestra inscribed into World Heritage List.
